The ‘Love Story’ Jewelry Narrative Has Gone Off The Rails

Remember the uproar last June when the first pictures of Love Story: John F. Kennedy & Carolyn Bessette were released? How CBK experts were outraged about the cheap looking clothes and the horrible hair color?
Things got so bad that executive producer Ryan Murphy felt compelled to chime in and say they were just “color test photos.”
Whether they were or weren’t, the first costume designer was canned. And a course correction was made with costume designer Rudy Mance who was responsible for Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.
Now there are no serious complaints about Sarah Pidgeon’s look as Carolyn in the FX show, which is currently in the midst of its 9 episodes. In fact, the show has been receiving rave reviews.
As a contemporary of CBK, I’ve been happily enjoying the ‘90s nostalgia. In particular, I love all the locations. Panna II Garden Indian Restaurant in the East Village wasn’t the spot of John and Carolyn’s first date, but it was hot at the time. There are also all the beloved restaurants of the era like Indochine, Odeon and Bubby’s.
The quick shout out to Florent in the Meatpacking District which is long gone was insidery. The John Pawson-designed Calvin boutique on Madison Avenue that closed years ago is mentioned. A minimalist temple, it captured the fashion designer’s prowess at the time.
All has been pretty good in my viewing experience, except for the long necklace they put on Jackie Kennedy (Naomi Watts). It was like some craft thing, as opposed to the gold styles Mrs. Kennedy actually wore. But I was trying to overlook it.
Then, on Friday, I watched Episode 4 “I Love You.” Suddenly, I felt compelled to review the jewelry narrative to set a few things straight. I am not as hysterical as the fashion and beauty people were about those “test photos” last year. Things are not that bad, but there are some issues.
