The red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival is as famous for excessively extravagant jewelry as massive couture ball gowns and naked dresses. Right before the event began and much to everyone's surprise, the organizers banned the extreme attire for "decency reasons" and "flow of traffic" on the red carpet. The French Fashion Police didn't, however, mention anything about the over-the-top jewelry, which went on as per usual.
The lavishness of the baubles accomplishes exactly what those orchestrating the appearances want—they garner a ton of press. Worth noting: It’s the same effect people are going for with the forbidden fashions. If you're interested in seeing the ostentatious treasures, they're easy to find. Vogue's article, aptly titled “All of the Most Bonkers Jewelry at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival” covers them nicely.
During the two-weeks of red carpets and press conferences which ended yesterday, I was (as always) interested in the design-focused jewels as opposed to the "bonkers" pieces. While the jewelry I've detailed below is still opulent by any measure, it is far more relevant. These jewels showcase current trends and can be recreated in a realistic mode.
EAR ORNAMENTS




For well over a decade, ear cuffs and studs scattered across the earlobe have been spotted on the red carpet. The examples at Cannes were something different. They stood out because they were single jewels designed to wrap around the ear or hit multiple piercings.
This has happened here and there before, of course. Ana Khouri has been doing the look for eons. Several of the big Houses have experimented with it too. The repeated display of ear ornaments at Cannes showed that the style has reached a new peak in popularity.
THE 90s ARCHIVAL PULL
The nineties fashion revival was still going strong at Cannes. Margaret Qualley, for example, walked the red carpet in a Chanel dress similar to one Claudia Schiffer debuted in the SS90 collection.
